How to log a meal from a photo in THRYV

Lunch is on the table and you want to record it before you forget. A meal photo gives you a starting point for your food log, with a review step before anything is saved.

The short version

Open Quick Add → Add Food → Capture Food. Take a photo or choose one from your library, tap Analyze Meal, review the result, and choose Save Meal when it looks right.

Before you start

Use THRYV for iPhone with Fuel or Pro access for AI meal analysis. Camera access is needed to take a new photo; choosing an existing image is another option. Availability can depend on your app version and enabled features.

Step by step

  1. Choose Capture Food

Open Quick Add and select Add Food. In Add Food Faster, choose Capture Food. This is the meal-photo option; Scan Food is the barcode option, and Scan Nutrition Card is for labels or recipe cards.

  2. Take or choose a clear meal photo

Tap Take Photo or Choose From Library. Keep the whole plate visible and use enough light to show the main foods. If the image misses part of the meal, choose Use a Different Photo before continuing.

Worth checking Keep a note of anything the photo cannot show clearly, such as cooking oil, a drink, dressing or the amount you actually ate.

  3. Analyse the image, then read the estimate

Tap Analyze Meal. THRYV prepares a Review Meal screen with the proposed meal name, meal type, Consumed At time and nutrition. Read any Check before saving warnings, and check the calories, protein, carbs and fat against what you know about the meal.

  4. Correct the details before saving

Change Meal Name, Meal Type or Consumed At if needed. Use Refine Result to describe a correction, then tap Refine Analysis and review the updated estimate. A useful correction might be “I ate half the rice” or “the sauce was on the side and I did not eat it”.

Worth checking A confidence value describes the analysis result. It does not make the portion size or nutrition exact.

  5. Save the meal to the right day

Check Consumed At once more, especially if you are logging a photo from yesterday. Choose Save Meal when you are happy with the reviewed result, then check your Fuel log for that day. Analysing or refining a photo alone does not save a meal.

What a meal photo can miss

A photo cannot reliably reveal every ingredient, cooking method or amount. Similar-looking meals can have different portions and nutrition. Treat the result as an estimate you can improve with the details you know.

When a packaged food has a readable barcode or a nutrition label, use the matching food-entry option and check the amount. If you know the ingredients but do not have a useful photo, Describe Food lets you provide that context in words.

An everyday example

A restaurant lunch, logged later

You photographed a chicken-and-rice bowl at lunch but open THRYV in the evening. Choose the photo, check that the proposed foods match, mention the dressing and how much rice you ate, and set Consumed At to lunchtime before saving. The date and the meal details both deserve a check.

Common questions

Does taking a meal photo automatically save it?

No. Photo analysis prepares a result for review. You choose Save Meal after checking the meal name, type, time, nutrition and any warnings.

Can I log a photo I took earlier?

Yes. Choose From Library lets you use an existing photo. Check Consumed At on the review screen so the meal belongs to the day and time you intended.

Is photo calorie counting exact?

No. Image-based nutrition is an estimate. Hidden ingredients, portion sizes and cooking methods can change the result. Review it and use Refine Result to supply missing context.

Which THRYV plan includes meal-photo analysis?

AI meal analysis is a Fuel or Pro feature. The app shows the available upgrade options if your current access does not include it.
